BACK TO THE ARTIST   Le tub, 1886           Details     Description     Artist EDGAR DEGAS This if one of the artist’s most original variations on his theme of a women at her bath. Probably from Japanese art3„4Degas3„4derived this daring perspective with its tilted paint of view and flattened shells of toilet articles which contrast with the curves in the figure and the tin bathtub. Always the realist,3„4Degas3„4has made something solid as well as lovely in surface from the woman’s body. The contour of the bather is most delicately apprehended and the light falls skilfully to model the full, rounded forms, which , incidentally , echo the shapes of the pitchers on the shelf. Supple, masterly, sketchy here, more finished there, is3„4Degas’ use of pastel.
